Southwest Petroleum University was originally established in 1958 as the Sichuan Petroleum Institute. In 1970 it was renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute and in 2005 it was granted full university status and became Southwest Petroleum University. The university is the second petroleum university in the People’s Republic of China.
The university is located in Chengdu City, the capital of the Sichuan Province in southwestern China.
There are 16 schools within the university, which include the School of Oil and Natural Gas Engineering, the School of Geo sciences and Technology, and the School of Economics and Management. Each school offers a range of both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.
The university has developed partnerships with higher education institutions around the world to facilitate academic and scientific exchanges. These partnerships are with institutions from countries including Russia, Germany, the US, the UK, France, Canada and Japan.
Throughout the year the university carries out research into the petroleum and natural gas industry.
SWPU has been awarded the grand prize and first prize of “National Science and Technology Progress” and the second prize of “National Science and Technology Progress and Invention”, totaling 133 times; the university has been awarded state-level teaching achievement prizes and ministerial-level teaching achievement prizes, the former amounting to 8 times while the latter 84 times. For academic exchanges and research collaboration, SWPU has established close ties with universities and academic research institutions in the United States, Russia, Britain, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, etc.
The current student body on the two campuses includes29,367 undergraduates, 4,037 graduates, 700 PhD candidates and 301 international students. So far SWPU has produced more than 146,000 bachelors, masters and doctors, many of whom have established themselves as preeminent specialists and scholars, great statesmen,successful entrepreneurs, or technological and managerial backbones in various fields.
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and a major centre for finance, transport and communications in Western China. It is situated on the fertile Chengdu Plain, the site of Dujiangyan, one of China’s most ancient and successful irrigation systems, watered by the Min River. Chengdu is famously home to giant pandas, which live in the mountains to the west and north, making it one of the world’s fastest growing tourist destinations
Chengdu became famous for its fine brocades and satins. The city was also notable for its refined culture and display of luxury. Throughout history it has remained a great city and a major administrative centre, and it has been the capital of Sichuan since 1368.
The city is also a major industrial centre. In the 1950s a large thermal power-generating station was built, and two important radio and electronics plants were installed by Soviet experts. A precision-tool and measuring-instrument plant was also established to serve the southwestern region.
Meanwhile, as with all ancient cities, one of Chengdu’s key challenges is to preserve its history, preventing cultural assets from being lost or misappropriated through modernization and commercialization. The City is exploring ways to raise public awareness of declining traditions and the value of Chengdu’s cultural heritage.
