In 1956, Chongqing Medical University (CQMU) was established, which was initially known as Chongqing University of Medical Sciences. This university was originally a branch of the Shanghai First Medical College which is now named the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. The Ministry of Education of China and the Ministry of Health of China and Chongqing Municipal Government all together administer Chongqing Medical University that has turned into a noteworthy open therapeutic college.
This is a comprehensive medical university with a diverse offering of Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral programs. It is one of the medical universities in China that has got permission by the Chinese Ministry of Education to enroll international students into the English-medium MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) program.
CQMU has 2 campuses, the main campus is situated in the downtown area of Chongqing. Geographically, the university is well located in the city, within easy reach to restaurants, hospitals, shops, post offices, banks, launderettes, swimming pools and gyms. CQMU is only about a 35-minute ride from the university to Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. Buses and monorails which lead to different parts of the city are just outside the university. The new campus, start in 2007, is located in a quiet and beautiful area of the city, with shades of green trees and flowers in blossoms in all seasons. Students from all over countries are warmly welcome to CQMU.
The university has 5,500 staff, of whom more than 358 are professors and around 803 associate professors. There are 202 Ph.D. supervisors. Many of them enjoy the special government allowances or have been selected into some national programs, such as “Project for Millions of Talented People of New Century”, “Cheung Kong Scholar and Innovative Team Program”, “Project for New Century Excellent Talents in Universities” and “Project for Trans-century Talents” etc.
CQMU also has three state key laboratories of MOE, one state key laboratory of Chongqing and Ministry of Science and Technology, one national engineering research center, 24 municipal key laboratories, 11 research institutes, 6 research centers and 22 research laboratories
In the year of 2009, total 229 research papers were included in SCI, 1 year increase of 38%. The number of essays included in CSTPCD hit 2,570, ranking 24th among all the domestic universities and institutions and 5th in medical universities and institutions. There are eight academic journals published to readers home and abroad. Since 2008, Chongqing Medical University has achieved National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology twice, National Award for Technological Invention once and municipal awards over 80 times. The High-Intensity Focused Ultrasonic Therapy System (HIFU), which was initiated by CQMU, is the first large-scale medical equipment with completely independent intellectual property rights in China. CQMU has been put into use in around 30 major hospitals in China and exported from about 10 foreign countries, such as the EU, Russia, Japan, Korea and Singapore.
Chongqing Medical University has been strongly conducting international exchanges and cooperation. So far, it has established relationships with more than 20 countries and regions in the world, such as the America, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, France, Australia, Russia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and it has carried out academic exchanges and cooperation with institutes of higher education and scientific researches in these countries and regions.
One of the biggest cities in the world, with over 30 million people, Chongqing is an exciting metropolis. Few places in China, or anywhere else can claim an annual GDP growth rate of at least 10 percent for well over a decade. For me, Chongqing is rather like a small province, with a core city of over 8 million people. Economic growth began to take off spectacularly since Chongqing became its own municipality, separate from Sichuan province in 1997.
With a history stretching 3,000 years, Chongqing has been an important political, economic and strategic centre in China’s west. It is known as “mountain city” owing to its rugged terrain and steep gorges. The rest of the country also calls it one of China’s four “furnaces” as it becomes hot and humid in summer. The Yangtze River starts here and winds through the municipality and makes its way towards Shanghai on the eastern seaboard more than 1,600 kilometers away.
Chongqing is China’s biggest producer of automobiles with an annual production of over 3 million vehicles in 2016. It also produced more than 8 million motorcycles. Incredibly, Chongqing produced 58 million laptops – one third of the world’s production in 2016. It also produced 280 million mobile phones that year, which was 15 per cent of China’s total mobile phone production.
Today, Chongqing has become an increasingly important trading and investment partner for Australia, and a rapid growing source of tourists and students. The average annual temperature in Chongqing is 18℃. January is the coldest month, at an average of 7℃; July and August is the hot season, normally between 27℃-38℃. Chongqing is a humid city. Summer and autumn are the rainy seasons. The annual rainfall is 1,000-1,100mm.
